Setting up and running your own business can be a liberating experience. You’re no longer just another employee – you’re the boss. You make the decisions, and you’re in charge.
But the flipside of this is that there can be a huge amount of responsibility. There may be no regular pay cheque at the end of the month, and if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. You need to be independent-minded, and willing to work as hard as it takes to get success.
So how do you know if business is the right path for you, or if the type of business you’re planning is the right one?
The first step is to think about your motivation for going into business in the first place. There is no right or wrong answer to this – but your reasons will shape the kind of business you should try and run.
For example, if your business is going to be a part-time job rather than your only source of income, you can afford to be a little more relaxed about the time it takes to make your business succeed.
As an exercise, write down what you think are the strengths and weaknesses of your personality. Now think about how these strengths and weaknesses match up to your potential business. If, for example, you hate sorting out finances then a business which requires you to keep all the books may not be for you. Plan your business with your personality in mind, and you’ll have something that you can commit your time to.
