A business is only as good as its staff so knowing how to get the best out of them can make a huge difference. Here we share our top five ways to manage your staff effectively and improve your recruitment, retention and productivity in the process.
Leadership
Good management skills are a must for any business, but developing an effective workforce requires more than just good organisation. To take your business to the next level you need to be a good leader too.
Whether someone is naturally a good leader or not, there’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Ask a range of employees and they will probably all have different answers, but one main characteristic should be their position in the team. By providing the direction and vision for the business it should be their role to take the initiative and create a great working environment for everyone.

Motivating
To operate in a competitive market you need to do more than just pay well. A recent survey by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) asked 5000 people from a variety of workplaces what inspired them. In response, a shocking 93 per cent wanted to see their manager create a feeling of fun, energy and excitement.
Considering the social and psychological needs of your staff is one of the true ways to make your staff feel valued. Rewarding good performance and providing your staff with long-term opportunities can enhance employee commitment whilst improving staff retention and absence.
Training
As your business grows and develops so too must your staff. Investing in staff development will not only help you respond to your employee needs, but also your business ones. While formal training schemes are one way of developing specific skills, internal job shadowing or work-based learning can be a more immediate and inexpensive method of increasing the skills levels in your business.
Setting goals
It’s all very well and good for you to have a personal vision for your business, but your staff may not be reading from the same page. Communicating your plans for the company and setting team and individual goals can help keep people motivated and increase productivity. People perform much better, both professionally and personally, when they have a clearly defined goal to focus on. But remember, goals only work when there is a specific time frame for achievement. Changing the goal posts and forgetting to reward staff at the end will have lasting damage on your team’s motivation.
Communicating
Effective management is nothing without good communication. Listening to your staff and responding to their needs is something that takes time and effort, however its effects shouldn’t be underestimated.
Building a good communications strategy, either through one-to-one meetings, team briefings or group emails can help to motivate your team and make your staff feel more included. Yet it’s important to understand that no single method of communication can work effectively on its own. Developing an open-door policy is one way of staying in tune with the culture of your organisation and can create a better working environment.
