There's lots of simple ways to make moving easier. Here's our checklist for moving success.
Talking to suppliers
When calling any suppliers, it helps to have all your details to hand – including your account numbers!
Work out when you need to move, and stick to this date, as your suppliers will need to have a fixed date to work to. BT, for example, has a standard lead time of 10 working days for installing new PSTN lines, although this is subject to survey.
Give your suppliers contact names and numbers for the site where the work is to be carried out.
List the requirements of your new premises, and let BT know if it’s a new site, shared office, and any other details such as whether it’s a listed building.
If you can’t take your old number with you, ask about BT’s Caller Redirect service.
Business opportunities
Sit down and evaluate your needs for the new building carefully. Talk to your suppliers to find out if they can help with new or more cost-effective services.
Assess if there are any business continuity needs – you can talk to BT for help.
Look at the effectiveness of your current phone systems. Talk to staff about whether the system you have is meeting all their needs, and then talk to your supplier about any shortfall between needs and reality.
Keeping everyone informed
List all the utilities you need to contact – gas, electricity, water and so on – and notify them as soon as you have a moving date. Don’t leave it to the last minute!
Arrange for redirection of your mail, through Royal Mail Customer Services.
Check with suppliers of computers, faxes, and other equipment in case they are the only people authorised to move them.
Inform your insurance company about the move. You should also arrange insurance to cover the items to be moved, and the buildings against any damage caused by the move.
And finally, consider a bit of PR: your move may be local news!
