Small & medium business

What skills will I need?

When you think about the skills you need to start your own business, you probably think about the skills directly involved in your line of work. But there are other skills you’ll need, which are vital if you’re going to be a success.

So when thinking about starting up yourself, ask yourself these questions:

Am I good at handling pressure?

There will be times when you feel like you’re in a pressure cooker. You need to be able to take the rough with the smooth – being in business isn’t always easy.

Am I able to persevere?

Good business people are often a little stubborn, and quite persistent. Not everything will go your way, so the ability to stick with things and not give up too easily will be vital.

Am I good with people?

Business is fundamentally about people – partners, customers, and when you grow, even employees. Being able to handle people and get the most out of them is a big advantage.

Am I confident enough?

Everyone has doubts, and there will be times in business when you’ll doubt yourself. But having confidence in your own decisions will help you get through the tough times and make the most of the better ones.

Am I organised?

You’ll be juggling a lot of things as your own boss, from doing whatever it is you went into business for through to doing the books to occasionally sweeping the floors. That means you’ll be busy – so you’ll need to be good at organising your time.

If you can answer “yes” to all these questions, then you’ll have all the skills you need to make the most of your opportunity. If, on the other hand, you think there are some gaps in your skills, don’t despair – as long as you know where your weak points lie, you can either develop the skills as you go or employ other people who complement your skills.
