Dress for success

Tesco has banned them, you wouldn’t be seen dead wearing them out to the office, but are pyjamas the perfect Working-From-Home attire?

Outrage and disgust were some of the words cried last month over Tesco’s plans to ban customers from shopping in their pyjamas or barefoot. Although the company explained that it didn’t have a strict dress code, it claimed it didn’t want people shopping in their nightwear in case it offended other customers.

A little extreme some might say, but aside from mooching around the house on a weekend, and of course in bed, when is it legitimate to wear your nightwear? Obviously not to the office, but how about when you’re working from home?

Don’t get me wrong I’m all for flexible working, even workplaces that don’t have formal dress codes get my vote. But working in your pyjamas for the whole day? That’s just borderline lazy.

To think like a professional you have to dress like one and if you’re working from home surely getting up and getting dressed is part of the structure to your day. Not to mention if your colleagues suggest a video call.

And don’t even think about pairing a shirt and tie with pyjama bottoms and slippers. Take from a fashion expert: it's just plain wrong and can still be considered offensive if you have to nip to the shops.

Is stuff even serious enough to write about? If you are focussing on on what people wear more than what their abilities are, then you are guilty of unimaginative thinking. The trouble is you are recommending to 'business people' that they perpetuate this thinking 'downward' to all their staff. Focussing on the superficial is not worthy of even the (very few) words posted above, but worryingly it distracts people from dealing with things that actually matter.
