It’s that time of the year again when you need to dig through your receipts and start calculating how much you earned last year. It’s a task most of us dread but one that must not be forgotten.
In case you’ve missed the TV, radio and billboard adverts, online tax returns must be filed by midnight on Sunday 31 January 2010 or face a late fee of £100 – not a great start to the new decade.
If you’re new to filing online ensure that you register to use HMRC online services by 21 January 2010, and await your activation code through the post - this can take around a week to arrive.
If you’ve done it before, congratulations, but you might want to keep note of these handy tips:
- Use the service during its quietest times. While the services are available 24 hours a day 365 days a year, considering logging on between 5.00 pm and 8.00 am Monday to Friday.
- Check for service issues. Site maintenance is usually scheduled but don’t get caught out. Use this link to the HMRC to plan ahead.
- Struggling to use the service? Fear not, help is on-hand, including a step-by-step guide, resources for the visually disabled and telephone helplines.
