Move with the times – go mobile

Companies are wising up to the benefits of mobile working, with some hiking their mobile IT budget up as much as 20%, new research claims.

Gartner’s survey revealed that building a long-term mobility strategy was the highest priority for the majority of medium to large businesses targeted, followed closely by aims to integrate mobile technology with the existing IT infrastructure and wireless device management.

Monica Basso, research VP at Gartner, commented on the phenomenon: “Mobility is going mainstream. It is maturing. And enterprises are moving from a phase of experimentation into a phase of rationalisation, where mobility investments are part of the overall IT picture.”

Despite the benefits, integration with current IT infrastructures can present some challenges, as business operations will need to be aligned: “As mobility investments keep growing, security and management become critical elements for organisations to make sure that their deployments integrate properly with the rest of the IT infrastructure,” Basso adds.

Of those respondents already aboard the mobile bandwagon, 56% cited increased productivity as a direct advantage of going wireless.
