Small shops promised affordable premises

Boris Johnson has promised more affordable small premises in the capital to help small shops move to new developments.

Under Mr Johnson’s strategy Planning for a Better London, developers will have to sign contracts confirming that they will incorporate more affordable units in an aim to make the capital’s small businesses more successful.

‘Our small shops add real character and diversity to the capital’s high streets but they are finding themselves squeezed out by competition from supermarkets and rising unsustainable rents,’ he explained.

However, despite the adventurous plans, the British Retail Consortium has questioned how businesses would be defined and the availability of this funding.
